Albuquerque's own search demand shows that two-season shape rather than one annual flood. Averaged across the trailing year it runs 1,000 a month, against a typical month of 800. ## What is causing the bad air in Albuquerque?

Albuquerque's dust doesn't run on the same calendar as Phoenix's or Tucson's. New Mexico's worst wind events cluster in spring, March through May. Cold fronts push through ahead of the summer monsoon and can lift dust across the whole Rio Grande valley at once. The monsoon itself arrives later, June through September, layering a second, shorter dust season on top of the spring one. Either way the pollutant is the same: coarse, wind-lofted [PM10](/aqi/) particulate matter, not the fine PM2.5 that dominates wildfire smoke.

Winter runs on a separate mechanism. Albuquerque sits low in the Rio Grande valley, boxed in by the Sandia Mountains to the east and the West Mesa's volcanoes to the west. That shape traps cold, dense air near the ground on calm nights — a thermal inversion, the same basic mechanism behind Denver's brown cloud. It holds vehicle exhaust and wood smoke down instead of letting them disperse. ## Is the air safe to breathe in Albuquerque today?

This is a three-way call, not a yes-or-no. **Go**: nothing changes. **Short and unloaded**: the shorter bosque loop, not a cancelled walk. **Don't go** means exactly that. How long and how hard are two different dials, not one.

Runners, parents and asthmatics don't share a cutoff, and none of theirs matches the EPA's single sensitive-groups line. On r/Marathon_Training, one runner drew it at 110: "I'll run in up to 110 because...error bars." Parents this project has seen online land closer to 100, the point a group outing gets cancelled instead of shortened. An asthmatic runner went further, logging 156 runs against AQI to find a personal wall at 60. Past it, "my lungs struggle regardless of how well I've trained," though EPA calls nothing under 100 unhealthy. The pattern in their log: 87% of runs under 50 went fine, 42% between 50 and 70, just 12% past 70.

Smoke reaching Albuquerque almost always started somewhere else, and it drags every one of those numbers down about one EPA band once it arrives. ## Why our number may not match what you are seeing and smelling

Ground-level ozone is invisible and odorless wherever it forms, Albuquerque included. On a clear, still summer afternoon the reading can run higher than the sky suggests. That's the same gap that shows up in Phoenix, Denver and Los Angeles. There's no smelling your way to a safe read on it.
