[Fire.airnow.gov](https://fire.airnow.gov/) is the map. It plots PM2.5 onto every county, updated as fast as the monitors report. It doesn't say how long today's smoke lasts or why the sky looks worse than the number. It doesn't say whether closing windows helps or which filter rating protects you instead of damaging your HVAC. Wildfire smoke isn't one substance, either. A forest fire, a burning neighborhood and highway exhaust put different particles into an identical AQI number. Your lungs usually notice before the index does.

## Is the smoke near you right now, or still overhead?

A ground sensor and the sky over your head measure two different things, and they frequently disagree. On August 13, 2026, a Bellevue, WA resident asked why the AQI read 30 while the sky glowed red. Top reply, 949 upvotes: "Air sensor on ground, smoke up high (for now)." Shorter, from another: "Sky biiiig, smoke faaar" (354 upvotes).

Smoke commonly sits aloft, a few thousand feet up. It hasn't mixed down yet to the ground-level sensors that feed your AQI number. NOAA's HRRR-Smoke model forecasts two separate numbers for the same spot. One is near-surface smoke: what you're actually breathing. The other is vertically integrated smoke: the full column, ground to several thousand feet up. A calm surface number and an ugly sky can both be correct at once. One commenter linked a live smoke plume forecast and called it "smoke aloft mostly" (261 upvotes). Check it alongside the AQI. Don't check it instead of the AQI. ## Where is the smoke actually coming from?

Increasingly, from Canada — new for some cities, not routine. On July 16, 2026, a PM2.5 spike broke Chicago's own reporting scale. "the chart caps out at like 500 and the measurements are showing 700-800" (392 upvotes). Nearby Northbrook read 938. A 65-year Chicago resident: "I have never smelled smoke from Canada until last summer" (90 upvotes). Another, 25 years in the area, called it something new — not a repeat (234 upvotes).

For the Pacific Northwest, the same event has its own name: "smoke season." It arrives as reliably as the browning lawns that precede it. "In 2 months it will dry out... and the smoke and dust will come," one Seattle-area commenter wrote (159 upvotes). ## How long will the smoke last?

No single number answers this. Wind and fire behavior shift hour to hour, and no public forecast model commits with real confidence past about two days. The rule the Pacific Northwest has settled on: watch for a wind shift or incoming rain, not a calendar date. An inversion breaks when a storm punches through the cap holding it in place. ## Is it safe to go outside right now?

Treat wildfire smoke as roughly one EPA band worse than the same AQI number from traffic exhaust. Several runners and asthmatics report the gap independently. EPA classifies AQI 101-150 as [Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups](/aqi/) — the agency's own band wording, not a verdict on any one reader's lungs specifically.

That one-band shift is a folk correction, not an agency one, and we label it that way every time we use it. "Smoke at AQI 50 feels way worse than pollution at AQI 50. Different particulate composition maybe?" one asked on r/Asthma. Another drops her usual cutoff specifically for smoke: "anything over 60 I won't run in. Sometimes even 50-60, especially if it's wildfire smoke" (2 upvotes).

One Bay Area commenter traced that difference to California's Paradise fire. It burned a town, not a forest. Afterward: "my lungs burned like a mf breathing compared to when I breathe in [ordinary wildfire] smoke." Three calls exist, not two: go as usual, short and unloaded, or don't go. The hard stop lands near 200. One parent describes going into "basically a lockdown" over that line (12 upvotes). Going out anyway: an N95 or P100 respirator blocks at least 95% of particles at the hardest-to-filter size (0.3 microns); P100 rates 99.97%, per an air-quality researcher's thread on r/AirQuality (75 upvotes). Cloth and surgical masks don't.

## Should you close your windows?

Yes, for now — even though it traps CO2 and off-gassed VOCs indoors. The same r/AirQuality thread answers the objection directly: "Won't the air quality indoors be bad if I seal the windows? Won't it be stuffy and won't I be trapping in the CO2? Well, yes, the CO2 will definitely increase... However... PM2.5 from the wildfires will be much worse for you at the current concentrations (esp. AQI 100+)... closing your windows for now is the best recommendation for most people."

## What MERV rating actually matters for wildfire smoke?

None, by default — a portable HEPA purifier or a Corsi-Rosenthal box is the safer starting point, not a whole-house filter swap. MERV-13 is the number that circulates online, and it does capture more smoke particulate than a standard filter. Whether your system can pull air through it is a separate question, and it's the one that gets skipped. One r/hvacadvice poster had a top floor that wouldn't cool. His HVAC technician traced it to the high-restriction filters in the returns and told him to drop to MERV 5-8. After the swap, the AC stopped struggling (487 upvotes). Read that thread to the end, though. Its two highest-voted replies push back hard, one of them from someone who says he helped design the filter media: "MERV isn't an airflow rating. Never has been." The disagreement is the useful part — none of them can tell you what your specific blower will do. An air-quality researcher on r/AirQuality put the failure mode plainly. Buy the monitor before the purifier if the budget forces a choice. One widely-upvoted post (898 upvotes) argues a monitor's real value is confirming the purifier actually works.
