Ozone that peaks in May, smoke at dawn
Ozone here runs against the national calendar. Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection puts the state’s ozone season at roughly March through October with the peak in May rather than midsummer, because from June onward the daily sea breezes and afternoon storms turn the interior over faster than the sunlight can build anything in it. The months with the strongest sun are not the months with the worst ozone in this metro.
Particulates run on a shorter clock, a daily one. Pine flatwoods and rangeland around the metro are burned on rotation through the dry half of the year, and on a clear, calm night the ground here cools quickly, a shallow inversion forms a short way up, and smoke that would have lifted out in daylight settles into low ground and river bottoms instead. PM2.5 climbs toward dawn and mixes out by mid-morning. That sawtooth looks nothing like the flat multi-day plateau of a western smoke event, and a 24-hour average flattens it close to invisibility.
