Nebraska air quality today

Three agencies measure Nebraska’s air, and two of them are county health departments. Douglas County’s covers Omaha, Lincoln-Lancaster County’s covers Lincoln, and the state has everything else. The daily AQI figures for the two metros come from those county departments rather than from the state agency, whose name changed recently: the Department of Environment and Energy merged with Natural Resources on July 1, 2025 to become the Department of Water, Energy, and Environment, so older documents and links still carry the previous name.

Nebraska meets the national standards. The days that exceed them are mostly fine particulate, and mostly days when smoke transported from fires hundreds or thousands of miles off is sitting over the state. There is no basin here to keep it: the Platte valley is broad and shallow, the land tilts gradually east across the whole width of the state, and air moves through rather than pooling. That makes the timing of a bad reading a question of what is upwind and how the flow is set, not of a local season with a start and an end date.

What the state emits on its own is agricultural and industrial rather than metropolitan: tillage and harvest dust, feedlots, ethanol plants, and the freight moving through Omaha. The state’s one National Core multipollutant station sits on the Douglas County Health Department’s midtown campus in Omaha and runs particles, pollutant gases and meteorology continuously. Outside those two metros there is not much instrumentation to read from, which is also where our own city coverage stops.
