is the air safe to breathe in Fresno today

Fresno’s cold air pool traps wintertime smoke from wood-burning and agricultural fires across the wider San Joaquin basin, not just from inside the city. A clean-looking local reading can still sit under smoke drifting in from farmland miles off. Go on an ordinary day. Short and unloaded: half the hike instead of the full trailhead-to-summit route. Don’t go past that.

On EPA’s scale, the warning to everyone opens at 151, Unhealthy. 201 to 300, Very Unhealthy, is that same warning at a harder edge, not a new group. Once a reading clears roughly 200, the valley isn’t clearing itself anytime soon — plan indoors.

what AQI should you stay inside

One asthmatic runner’s 156-run log put their personal ceiling at 60. 87% of runs succeeded under AQI 50, 42% between 50 and 70, just 12% past 70. Past 60, “my lungs struggle regardless of how well I’ve trained,” they wrote, even though EPA calls nothing under 100 unhealthy.

No published California rule sets a daycare or school AQI threshold, as far as this project has confirmed. Washington’s and Minnesota’s are the only two documented numbers anywhere in the material reviewed. A Washington school at 75, a Minnesota centre at 100 has both.

Wildfire smoke, distinct from the valley’s own wintertime ag-burning haze, still pulls every one of those numbers down roughly one more EPA band. EPA classifies that stretch as 101–150, Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups — their band wording, not a verdict on your lungs. A portable HEPA unit or a home-built Corsi-Rosenthal box is the indoor default; $130 got one community member a 12x14 bedroom’s worth of filtration. why our number may not match what you are seeing and smelling

The mismatch cuts two directions here. A clear, still afternoon with no visible haze can still carry an AQI in the 100s. Ground-level ozone, this metro’s dominant summer pollutant, is invisible and odorless — check the number instead of the sky. A smoky-looking sky with a surprisingly calm number is usually smoothing across recent hours diluting a rough hour, or smoke sitting aloft above the monitor.

That smoke is often drifted in from a Sierra Nevada fire well outside the metro. Neither direction is the fake one — the number and your senses are measuring different things.

why Fresno air gets worse in winter

By search interest, Fresno mostly doesn’t fit the winter-smog headline. Sacramento (159%) and Bakersfield (114%) both show a clear January skew against their own median month. Fresno’s raw data reads differently. January measures 3,600, well clear of the median month of 1,300, yet it isn’t the year’s high. September is the year’s high — 8,100, squarely inside fire season.

Weighing the four winter months (November through February) against the eight non-winter months gives a ratio near 95% — essentially flat, not winter-shifted. This project’s own brief for this page assumed San Joaquin Valley demand was never measured at all, but the raw keyword data on file for “air quality fresno” shows otherwise: it points to fire season, not winter inversion, as this metro’s actual driver. That 95% figure isn’t yet in this project’s published seasonality table — it’s this page’s own read of the raw monthly data, flagged here rather than treated as settled.

None of that erases the physical mechanism. Cold air can still settle onto the San Joaquin Valley floor most winters, the same cold-air pool documented across the basin. It can trap PM2.5 from vehicles, wood smoke and agricultural burning when it does. What the search data suggests is narrower: this winter pattern doesn’t dominate reader interest here. One valley north, in Sacramento, and one county south, in Bakersfield, it does. Sacramento sits at the valley’s northern, Delta-adjacent edge, and Bakersfield anchors the valley’s southern end.
